It has been too long.

Wow, it has been a really long time since I updated this. Sorry to all of those people who may have been waiting. Life has been very busy for me lately. After OCS I started standing duty and learning my job as a Marine Inspector. My son was born Sept 8 and that has kept be busy. No flying since I joined the Coast Guard, but I am hoping to remedy that in a short time. I am not sure if I will be pursuing a career as a Coast Guard Aviator, I am doing fine, just not sure if a Coast Guard career is for me. With all of the opportunities the GI bill opens up to me it is a difficult decision. For about $3000 I could get my CFI and build flight time that way. So many options. At any rate, I will try to do better at posting now. I will post a pic of my son later. Till next time, fly safe... Oh and Happy New Year too!!

How long before you could apply for a USCG flight slot if you wanted to?

I could have applied aready, they had a board in December, but I chose to wait. A friend from OCS applied for that boad and was picked up, he will be headed to Pensacola in Feb. There is another board in March, but I am not going to apply for that one either. I bought a house at my current location and can't really afford to sell it yet, I would lose money if I did. And to Eric, if you notice I already have a Multi Engine commercial, I just need a single commercial add on that would be really easy and in-expensive.

Thanks for your reply. I'm only a sophomore at college but I am looking ahead to flying in one of the military branches. I would prefer The USCG but I am just wondering how selective they are, when I read your blog and the fact that with a great resume like you have that you weren't pick for flight school out of OCS it made me wonder if I would ever get a chance. But seeing as that you can apply as early as 6 months after OCS (if I am figuring it right) that would be encouraging. Thanks for the reply and good luck.

So how are you like being in the Coast Guard as a career? I'm thinking about being an officer in it. I would love to be a pilot but for my situation is it possible to have no flight experience and they still select you to fly? I do have non-flying prior military experience but not sure if that will help. If not my backup plan is the counter terrorism way or computers in the coast guard.

I stumbled across your blog while looking for information on the Coast Guard. How do you like it? I am a Senior in my Flight School and look to Graduate in May 2010, roughly two months, with a Bachelors Science degree as a "Professional Pilot". Currently I have my Private, Commercial, and Instrument. Within the next two weeks I should be testing for my CFI, with a Multi-Engine following shortly after. When I graduate I'm going to go to ATP to get my MEI and CFII. The last couple of weeks I have been seriously considering seeking a flying career in the Coast Guard as opposed to a civilian flight career. Any advice or heinseit you can give me is much appreciated. In response to the comment by Eric StMilligan, obtaining your Private Pilots License is a lot harder than obtaining a Commercial License. When you get your Private you are learning to fly from scratch with no knowledge at all about anything. When you get your commercial you are just flying the same check ride as your private but to higher standards, with the exception that you may have to shoot one approach if you are taking a MUlti-Commercial ride. But the fact that as a Commercial Applicant you already know how to fly makes the process a lot easier. Thanks for the blog and I look forward to reading about your continuing journey after OCS. -aviatorduckboy

A Pilot's Journey

I received my private pilot certificate in August 2000 while in college, and graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in Computer Science. I was a Software Engineer for a Medical Software company for 5 years and during that time I continued my training and received my Instrument and Multi Engine Commercial certificates. I am now taking a new route to pursue my flying career. I am going to Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Coast Guard. Once finished with that I will apply for flight school and hopefully be on my way to living my dream. Please follow along as I continue my journey...
