It is Official

Well, I am officially an Ensign in the US Coast Guard. I Graduated on Wednesday and am now at my parents house in Kentucky enjoying some time off before I have to report to my unit in Port Arthur Texas. I will be reporting on May 21 then receiving 10 days off for house hunting purposes. The last couple of weeks at OCS were not to bad as my wife was able to come into town and we received gangway liberty meaning we could stay off base over night during the week then be back in the morning for the days obligations. I am looking forward to getting to my unit and learning my job. I might put in for flight school after I have received a couple of evaluations and if my command will give me an endorsement. At any rate I am hoping to continue flying once I get to Texas. There are a couple of airports in the area where I could get checked out in an airplane and I may look into flying with the Coast Guard auxiliary where I could get some flight time for free. Till next time, fly safe...

Hello, my name is SN Jason Haynes. I read your posts about OCS. I wondering if you would mind writing me in my CG email and letting me know more about OCS. I have a degree and am currently about to finish A school. I intend on applying to OCS as soon as I can get a CO recommendation. I am married and just had twins. I want to know more about when/how often you got to talk to your wife, and more about the priveliges you earn throughout the 17 weeks. I would really appreciate anything you could write me. Thanks,
SN Haynes

Congrats on graduating OCS! Just like Jason, I am looking into applying to OCS. I am almost done getting my college degree so it would be a civilian application. I just had some questions on the application process and how selective they are with applicants. Thanks in advance for the insight. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Congratulations! But don't let the flying stop. You have to keep going. Especially work on the cross-country time and get your instrument rating. Those are the times that eventually you are going to need if you want to take this further. Also, you might want to consider getting into the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). They are always looking for motivated pilots who are willing to help young adults with their careers and the bonus is that you get to fly their airplanes for F.ree. Plus being a new officer would really impress the kids!!! Anyway, good luck! Regards, Jeffrey

A Pilot's Journey

I received my private pilot certificate in August 2000 while in college, and graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in Computer Science. I was a Software Engineer for a Medical Software company for 5 years and during that time I continued my training and received my Instrument and Multi Engine Commercial certificates. I am now taking a new route to pursue my flying career. I am going to Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Coast Guard. Once finished with that I will apply for flight school and hopefully be on my way to living my dream. Please follow along as I continue my journey...
